Mathematics Department Scholarships and Awards

  • Outstanding Junior Mathematics Major Award
    • This award is to honor an outstanding junior currently pursuing either a B.A. or B.S. in mathematics.  To be eligible a student must be a junior with all required 200 level mathematics courses completed and with at least a 3.0 GPA in mathematics.  Information concerning service to the college or community, participation in math competitions and/or scholarly achievement is valuable.

  • John Sooy Education, Junior Scholarship Award
    • This award is to honor an outstanding junior currently pursuing a double major in mathematics and education (either K-5 or K-12).  To be eligible a student must be a junior with all required 200 level mathematics courses completed and with at least a 3.0 GPA in mathematics.  Information concerning service to the college or community, participation in math competitions and/or scholarly achievement is valuable.

  • CSM Senior Recognition Award
    • This award is to honor a graduating senior who exemplifies the best and the brightest of the Mathematics department.  The department chooses the recipient based on the student’s contributions to the department, University and community. Consideration is given to students who may best represent the department and fields of study in the future, not necessarily the student with the highest GPA.  The selection is made not only in terms of academic successes but also nonacademic.  

  • James M. Shafer Exellence in Mathematics Medallion Award
    • Dr. James M. Shafer was a member of the Department of Mathematics from 1965 to 1980. He was instrumental in the development of the Mathematics major at the University.  This medallion is donated by the Department of Mathematics in his memory.

    • This award is to honor a graduating senior (a May graduate, or a student who graduated the previous December or summer).  Criteria include: highest GPA in math major courses above Calculus II; math publications and competitions; the number of math courses taken.
